One very unpleasant and often lengthy complication is dermatophytosis – commonly known as skin fungus or ringworm. How do you deal with it, and why is it important not to delay?

How to Recognize Skin Fungus?

Fungal skin infections in dogs most often manifest as circular bald spots, severe scaling, skin redness, and occasionally itching. These microorganisms thrive in warm, moist environments and can spread relatively easily not only between animals but unfortunately also to humans. If you suspect your dog is dealing with a fungal infection, timely intervention by a professional is essential.

Diagnosis and the Right Approach

The actual treatment of skin fungus in dogs cannot be successful without an accurate diagnosis. A veterinarian must use a special Wood's lamp, a microscope, or a fungal culture to determine exactly what type of fungus is involved (most often species of Microsporum or Trichophyton). Therapy usually involves a combination of special medicated shampoos, antifungal ointments, and in more severe cases, systemic oral medication.

You might be surprised to learn that there is also a special vaccination against certain types of fungal diseases. For selected dermatophytoses (e.g., those caused by the Microsporum canis fungus), these vaccines are used in practice not only as prevention but even as part of the treatment itself to accelerate the overall healing of the skin.
